Zoe and Agnes had the same voice and still somehow had zero chemistry. Sure, if Agnes had previous mentions of her codependence tendencies or fear of loneliness it would have made so much more sense. The story covers a four month time span, which didn't make sense for the pacing. LaRocca could have taken advantage of time skips (they literally could have spaced out the dates and announced so in the forward). It really felt like a prospective first draft more than anything. I would have liked more details from Agnes about her feelings in the moment. I don’t think the ending was BAD, just super rushed. I also really did not like how quickly it ended. I enjoyed the book a little bit, but for me it just didn’t live up to the hype at all. We also don’t really know what Zoe’s intentions are, they were never very clear? Did she actually like Agnes or was she just fucking with her? A little bit of both? Maybe if the two had built a much stronger bond over time, then Zoe slowly begins to test Agnes’s loyalty. It felt like Agnes went off the rails out of nowhere for nothing. Maybe if it had taken place over the span of a couple years or so and we really got to see the type of manipulation that Zoe was capable of putting Agnes through.

I read this book in one sitting, it had all of the elements to be a very disturbing book… but for me it just fell flat? I thought that the plot was interesting, but it felt like it moved way too quickly and unnaturally. That could make for a very creepy and disturbing book. I would've liked it better if the reader knew the entire time that Zoe was simply toying with Agnes, and watched as Zoe slowly drove Agnes mad through her manipulation. I did like the premise and the format, but I think the execution was lackluster. So she commits this horrible, disgusting, act, gets a tapeworm, and then Zoe reveals she was just fucking with Agnes the whole time and that's it? There was no character development, no explanation for why Zoe would do this, no indication of whether any of Zoe's feelings or desires were "real." I get that the author was trying to shock the reader with this plot twist but it fell flat for me. All I could think when I was reading the emails was "who talks like this?" The book did have some nice prose in spots, but I think it would've worked better as an inner monologue from Agnes than something that she actually emailed to Zoe.įinally, the ending felt very anticlimactic. Second, the dialogue was so unrealistic and it took me out of the story. Agnes goes from reconsidering her relationship with Zoe, and feeling guilty about killing a salamander, to suddenly being batshit insane over the span of like. The characters' relationship developed way too fast, and everything escalated so quickly. I finished reading it in 2 sittings, and honestly I was pretty let down.įirst, it was too short for my taste. It was highly praised as extremely disturbing and scary. I saw this book recommended left and right on the horror lit side of TikTok.
